The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Objective:
Determine if distributed practice of neurological exam (NE) skills in first year medical school produces sustained improvements in the skills of second year students.
Methods:A prospective, controlled, non-blinded study conducted at McGill University (class size = 180 students). Expanded teaching of muscle stretch reflexes was provided to first year medical students. A structured examination of muscle stretch reflexes (max score = 100) was administered in second year medical school after a required two week rotation in Neurology. Results for class A (received the intervention in first year) were compared to the results for the preceding class B (had not received the intervention).
Results:77 of 177 (44%) eligible students in class A and 69 of 166 (42%) eligible students in class B participated. Results were analyzed separately for each of two examiners. Mean (SD) scores were 95.2 (5.6) for class A (intervention) and 81.7 (11.1) for class B (control) for the first examiner and 90.4 (8.2) for class A and 83.8 (11.7) for class B for the second examiner. Results were statistically significant (Mann-Whitney test z = 5.27, p < 0.0001 first examiner and z = 2.67, p < 0.0038 second examiner).
Conclusions:Distributed practice of muscle stretch reflexes during first year medical school results in improved performance by second year medical students after their mandatory clinical rotation in neurology, even when examined up to 14 months after the intervention. This finding has implications for the teaching of the NE.

The study aims to provide the first detailed account of the diversity and composition of the community associated with biogenic reefs formed by serpulid worms. Ten reefs (aggregations of calcareous Serpula vermicularis tubes), spanning a broad size-range, were collected from Loch Creran, Scotland, a Special Area of Conservation designated principally for the protection of its biogenic reefs. Total faunal abundance was strongly linearly related to reef weight, whilst taxon richness exhibited a hyperbolic relationship with reef size. 278 taxa were recorded from the ten reefs, with a reef of 0.1 m2 area supporting 163 taxa and 12756 individuals, which appears to represent considerable augmentation of diversity and abundance for sedimentary areas of the loch where the reefs occur. The reef assemblage was dominated by polychaetes (94 taxa), molluscs (70 taxa) and crustaceans (45 taxa). Species composition varied with reef size, although reefs greater than 25 cm width exhibited relatively little variation. In comparison with other biogenic polychaete habitats, S. vermicularis reefs appear to support a highly diverse community, which exhibits a high degree of similarity with that found in association with aggregations of the horse mussel, Modiolus modiolus. The presence of the Connemara clingfish, Lepadogaster candollei, rarely recorded at such a northerly latitude, on several reefs, indicates that the reef habitat may provide a stronghold for this species at the edge of its biogeographical range.

Limaria hians functions as a keystone species in construction of a highly diverse biogenic habitat. An investigation to quantify the biodiversity of two L. hians beds was carried out during the winter and summer seasons at two sites on the west coast of Scotland. Cores were taken semi-randomly through 100% L. hians nest material, organisms removed, identified and enumerated. Univariate and multivariate analyses of the data were used to establish temporal and locational differences. A total of 7275 individuals were found representing 282 species from 16 phyla. Univariate analysis revealed significant differences between the species richness of the two populations, whilst multivariate analysis illustrated differences in the assemblage compositions between sites and times. This study showed that in terms of richness and diversity these beds are among the most important biogenic habitats in the UK.

Following the discovery of the newly introduced red alga Heterosiphonia japonica in Loch Sunart, West Scotland in 2008, its local distribution, abundance and dominance within the algal community was examined by in situ observations and algal collections at sites in Loch Sunart and Loch Creran. It was found to be common in both lochs at semi-exposed and sheltered locations, where it was generally one of the dominant species attaining 12% coverage of the seabed below a Laminaria saccharina forest canopy and 28% cover in the shallow circalittoral, where it formed a virtual macroalgal monoculture. Possible vectors for its spread in the area are discussed. The presence of Sargassum muticum is also reported at one of the sites, representing the most northerly UK record of this species in the literature.

Amongst Gunnar Thorson's concluding remarks in his review on marine-bottom communities (Thorson, 1957) he noted that a sequel to the study of macrobenthic parallel communities should be a detailed analysis of the meiobenthos and microbenthos within these communities, adding that the work by Remane and his collaborators in shallow water and on beaches in Kiel Bay indicated that the meiobenthos is likely to show a pronounced uniformity within these communities. Many qualitative sub tidal meiobenthic surveys have followed (e.g. Gerlach (1958) for the nematodes; Por (1964) for the copepods) but it is only very recently that wide-scale quantitative work of the type pioneered by Petersen (1913) for the macrofauna has been applied to the meiofauna (Drzycimski (1969) and Soyer (1970) for the copepods; Ward (1973) and Tietjen (1977) for the nematodes). Around the coasts of Great Britain the only subtidal meiobenthic survey is that by Ward (1973,1975) of the nematode genera of Liverpool Bay, although quantitative faunal and environmental data are available for a number of sublittoral stations (Mclntyre (1964) and Wells (1965) for muddy deposits in Loch Nevis and the Fladen North Sea ground; Warwick & Buchanan (1970) for fine sand and silt deposits off the Northumberland coast; and Mclntyre & Murison (1973) for shallow fine sand in Firemore Bay).

The early qualitative works on the harpacticoid fauna of the British Isles by T. & A. Scott, Norman, Brady, Gurney and Thompson largely omitted the intertidal psammic biotopes. Nicholls (1935, 1939) did much to redress the situation, describing many new species of interstitial harpacticoids from the sandy shores of the Firth of Clyde. Although his studies were taxonomic, he supplied some useful information on the distribution of the species. Some ecological data is also to be found in subsequent works on the east coast of Ireland (Wells, 1963 a; O'Riordan, 1971), the Exe estuary (Wells, 1963 b) and the Isles of Scilly (Wells, 1961, 1970). The only detailed studies of interstitial harpacticoid zonation on British coasts are those of Harris (1972) for the lower shore at Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, and Mclntyre & Murison (1973) for Firemore Bay, Scotland.

The composition of subtidal meiobenthic associations off the Isle of Man is analysed, with particular reference to the harpacticoid copepods. By comparisons with surveys in other seas it is suggested that coherent associations of benthic copepods can be recognized in the sublittoral fringe area of tidal fine sand beaches and in offshore fine sand in Europe. The heterogeneity of offshore coarse deposits and muddy sands results in the inability to distinguish communities or isocommunities in these deposits. As muddy sand grades into mud some evidence is presented to suggest that, given similar temperature and salinity regimes, a consistent association of copepods may develop.
